2004 Marques de Murrieta Castillo Ygay Grand Reserva
95 points Wine Advocate
Cool Springs Wines & Spirits continues to take our customers through fabled wine regions enjoying unique wines.  In this second installment, we explore the red wines of Spain.  One of the most iconic wines in a fabled land of iconic wines, the “2004 Marques de Murrieta Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial has a delightful bouquet with scents of leather, mocha, freshly ground coffee beans and red berry fruit. It has a perfume that encapsulates everything there is to love about classic Rioja. The palate is a little viscous on the entry with hints of dried fig and dates. It is interwoven by a crisp thread of acidity and displays fine, slightly powdery tannins. There is abundant freshness and vitality: a Rioja speaking of its place with eloquence and clarity. This paragon of classic Rioja lives up to its evocative label. Drink now-2025+.”Ygay is comprised of 93% Tempranillo and 7% Mazuelo.  29 months in oak, 10 months of this in new oak.  An additional 3 years of aging in bottle before release.  The Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial pairs well with red meats, roasts, game, cured ham and strong cheeses. We recommend you decant the wine 40 minutes before serving it at 60 to 65º F.

2007 Bodegas Alejandro Fernandez Tino Pesquera

91 points Wine Advocate
Alejandro Fernandez was instrumental in bringing Ribera del Duero to international prominence since he established his bodega back in 1972. The 65 hectares of pure Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) vine lie on south-facing gravel inclines, and Fernandez is known for his late, meticulous picking, as well as long macerations and extended aging in both French and American oak.  “The 2007 Pesquera Reserva has an attractive bouquet with scents of leather and chocolate infusing the red-berry fruit. The aromatic unfurls nicely in the glass offering tempting scents of candied orange peel and apricot blossom. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy entry that belies the solid backbone to this Pesquera. It remains fresh and poised with tangy orange peel interlacing the structured finish. Drink 2013-2022.”  Pesquera is aged 18 months in new American oak and six months in the bottle before release.  Best enjoyed around 60º F with roasts, farm poultry, veal stews and goat cheese.

2008 Vegas Escal Red Blend
91 points Wine Advocate
All of the fruit for this wine is grown in and around Gratallops, where there tends to be warmer daytime temperatures than in the more northerly sub regions of Priorat. Vines range in age from 10 years for the Syrah to 50 years for the Cariñena. Grapes were hand harvested in the middle of September. Varietals were fermented separately with a total of 22 days on skins prior to pressing. Vegas Escal is aged 6 months in a combination of French and American oak barrels. “Enticing aromas of garrigue, lavender, incense, plum, and black cherry leads to a racy, intense, impeccably balanced, lengthy wine that can be approached now but will provide enjoyment for another 6-8 years.”  50% Garnacha, 40% Cariñena, 10% Syrah.  Enjoy with grilled and roasted meats and aged or smoked cheeses.

2010 Bodegas Volver Tarima Hill
93 points Wine Advocate
Bodega Volver, a joint project between Rafael Canizares and Jorge Ordonez, produces wines from three appellations, La Mancha, Alicante and Jumilla. Readers will need to take note of the nearly identical cuvees, some of which are made from organic grapes and others from non-organic grapes. That information is clearly marked on the labels. Slightly more expensive are the 2010 and 2009 Tarima Hill. “The opaque purple-colored 2010 Tarima Hill exhibits notes of chocolate fudge, pen ink, graphite, blueberries and blackberries. This full-bodied, 100% Monastrell should drink well for a decade or more. These amazing efforts taste more like they should cost $30 to $50 as opposed to the mid-teens.”  100% Monastrell (Mourvedre) aged 20 months in French oak.  Enjoy with grilled meats, roasted vegetables and aged cheeses.
