Hot Topic: Wine Trends for 2010

1. Malbec continues to be hot.
Malbec will continue to be the hot grape variety from Argentina and with good reason. This fleshy wine packs loads of black fruit and mild ripe tannins. Most Malbecs are great either with or without food. My favorite food pairings usually include grilled meats and BBQ. If you want to try a white from Argentina give Torrentes a go.
2. Sauvignon Blanc a cool trend.
Sauvignon Blanc grows well all over the world and the result is different styles and flavors to appreciate. New Zealand’s Sauvignon Blancs are usually zippy with strong aromas of grapefruit while the same grape in the Loir Valley generates a more steely often termed “classic style”. South Africa produces crisp Sauvignon Blancs with more of a melon aroma compared to the mild grassy California style. Graves rounds out the list with their rich and elegant whites. Regardless of the style, Sauvignon Blancs will continue to be a warm weather quencher.
3. Entertaining at home.
Most everyone is finding entertaining at home a fun and economical way to enjoy food, wine and friends. 2010 will bring even more experimentation with adventurous food and wine pairings. Food and wine pairing classes are a great way to gain some helpful tips and hints!
4. Bubbles for no occasion.
Sparkling wine is getting stronger here in the states (as it should) and we are finding inexpensive good sparkling wines from Italy (Prosecco and Asti), Spain (Cava) and good ole USA. When a sparkling wine costs under $15 it makes a perfect aperitif, ice breaker and all around good drink. Try sparkling wine at your next dinner for a refreshing change of pace.
5. Rosés perhaps not what you think.
Roses will continue to be the “new thing” as we find it goes great with food when you want a red, but it is just too hot to enjoy a big full bodied red. Dry roses go great with grilled meats, hamburgers, BBQ or anything you may be thinking red you can now think pink.
