Entertaining Ideas for the 4th of July

A Fourth of July party can have a drink menu that ranges from soft drinks for the kids to alcoholic spirits for the grown-ups. As families and friends gather for early summer barbecues and to watch fireworks, you can use these special drink ideas to help you celebrate the fourth.

For the grown-ups, you can make a delicious drink called the American flag cocktail. It is made with one third each of blue Curacao, white crème de cacao, and red grenadine. Mix them together with crushed ice and they will actually layer blue, white, and red. You can also make star spangled Fourth of July Jell-O shooters using red, clear, and blue Jell-O. They are served in little cups and can be arranged to simulate and American flag. And they can be made with and without liquor.

Yet another appropriate drink is the fire cracker. Pour 1 and 1/2 ounces of tequila into a highball glass, fill the glass with tonic, and stir and garish with a lime wedge. Then there is the Independence Day punch. This is made by pouring two bottles of ginger ale into a Bundt pan and then adding some orange slices. Freeze the mixture solid. It will chill the punch but not dilute it when it melts. Pour in two bottles of sherry, 26 ounces of rye, and three bottles of ginger ale. Cut in more orange slices and you will have a tasty punch that packs a punch. Finally there is the good old American apple pie cocktail. This is made by adding cinnamon schnapps to a glass of apple juice.

For the kids, besides the liqour-less Jell-O shots, you can make a red, white, and blueberry freezee. Mix together one cup of whipping cream, 1/2 cup of frozen blueberries, some lemon juice and sugar and whip it up in a blender. Top it off with a few strawberries. And for a tasty 4th of July holiday punch, blend together orange juice, frozen strawberries, cranberry juice. Then, just before serving, add ginger ale. These drinks are sure to delight adults and children alike!
